On April 29, 2026, Daryna Vasylivna Kravchuk, managing partner of the “Ester Guardians” Law Firm, Doctor of Philosophy in Law, and attorney-at-law, served as a lecturer at a professional development event for attorneys organized by the Higher School of Advocacy of the National Association of Attorneys of Ukraine (NAAU).

The webinar’s topic—“Compensation for Damages Caused to Ukrainian Businesses by the Russian Federation’s Armed Aggression”—generated significant professional interest among the legal community, as the issue of compensation for war-related damages remains one of the most pressing challenges for Ukrainian businesses and legal practice.

During the event, Daryna Kravchuk provided a detailed analysis of the legislative mechanisms for protecting the rights of affected businesses, current case law from the Supreme Court and commercial courts, as well as the practical aspects of preparing and handling claims for damages.

Particular attention was paid to the following issues:

identifying the proper defendant in disputes over compensation for damages caused by the Russian Federation’s armed aggression;
specifics of court fee payment and procedural concessions for plaintiffs;
building a proper evidentiary basis;
establishing a causal link between the actions of the aggressor state and the damages incurred;

documenting damaged or destroyed property, particularly in temporarily occupied territories;
an analysis of common mistakes that could lead to the dismissal of a claim;
prospects for enforcing court decisions using the alter ego doctrine.

During the webinar, participants received not only a thorough theoretical analysis but also practical recommendations on building a legal position and gathering evidence in cases seeking damages from the aggressor state.

Of particular value was the review of current case law, which is shaping modern approaches to compensating for damages inflicted on Ukrainian businesses as a result of the Russian Federation’s armed aggression.
